Battery Park vs Liberty State Park: Which Ferry to the Statue of Liberty?

Updated October 2026

The ferry to the Statue of Liberty leaves from two places: Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, and Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Statue City Cruises — the only authorized operator — runs both routes, and the ticket price is the same either way. So the question isn’t which is better in the abstract — it’s which one fits your trip.

Getting there

Battery Park wins for transit riders. It sits steps from several subway stations in Lower Manhattan, so if you’re staying in the city, you can ride straight there with no transfers to New Jersey. The trade-off: there’s no dedicated visitor parking lot, and driving in Lower Manhattan means expensive garages and traffic.

Liberty State Park wins for drivers. It has a large on-site parking lot, and it’s straightforward to reach from New Jersey highways. Without a car, it’s a longer trip — light rail plus a walk, or a rideshare from Manhattan — so it’s the worse choice if you’re car-free in the city.

Security lines

Both terminals run airport-style security screening before you board, so build in extra time regardless of which you pick. Battery Park tends to have the longer lines in peak season simply because more visitors funnel through it. Liberty State Park is usually calmer, but on a busy summer weekend neither one is fast. Arrive well ahead of your departure time — your ticket is for a specific ferry, and a missed screening line doesn’t wait.

The ferry ride itself

The crossings are short from both terminals — roughly 15–20 minutes to Liberty Island. The difference is what you look at. From Liberty State Park, the ferry runs toward the Manhattan skyline, which makes for the better photographs on the way in. From Battery Park, the skyline is behind you; the statue grows on the horizon instead. Both routes stop at Liberty Island and Ellis Island.

What’s the same from both

So which should you pick?

Choose Battery Park if you’re staying in Manhattan or anywhere in the five boroughs and getting around by subway. It’s the simplest logistics, and it’s the departure our Crown watch covers.

Choose Liberty State Park if you’re driving, staying in New Jersey, or you want the skyline-view crossing and shorter security lines. Just know the trade-off: we can’t monitor the NJ-departure Crown inventory, so if Crown tickets are sold out for your dates and you’re departing from Liberty State Park, you’ll need to check for cancellations manually.

One honest note: you can’t pick wrong here. The statue doesn’t care which boat you arrived on. Pick the terminal that makes your morning easier — that’s the whole decision.
